What does it mean to be an expert?

When we think of someone who has become an expert in a particular professional field, we tend to imagine that they have many options, earn a high salary, and enjoy a relatively free life.

But expertise does not necessarily translate into freedom. In some cases, the more indispensable a person becomes, the more responsibility, dependency, and constraint they accumulate.
